December 2021

Warm greetings to members and friends!  We wish to share an update with you on a very important initiative.  People to People of Delaware is helping refugees from Afghanistan start a new life right here in Delaware!

President Biden assigned our former governor, Jack Markell, the responsibility of overseeing the resettlement of Afghan refugees in our state.  Jack Markell designated Jewish Family Services of Delaware as the sole resettlement agency to assist these refugees.  This initiative is called RISE, the Refugee Integration Support Effort.  You may read more about it on Jewish Family Services’ website:  https://jfsdelaware.org.  PTPDE has decided to donate Target gift cards to RISE.  The professional staff and trained volunteers use these cards to purchase household goods, clothing, and food for newly arrived refugees.  Our donation of these gift cards is phase 1 of this new fundraising project.

You can help a newly arrived family by doing one of the following.

  1. Purchase a Target gift card and mail it to People to People, Delaware Chapter, P.O. Box 25064, Wilmington, DE  19899.
  2. Send a check made out to People to People, Delaware Chapter to the address above.  Funds from checks will be used to purchase Target gift cards.
  3. Donate HERE, select the option entitled “Funds for Families:  Afghan Refugees.” from the dropdown list.

The deadline for contributing to phase 1 of this project is December 31, 2021.  There are immediate needs that must be met for families who arrived this month, and we wish to be of assistance.

PTPDE will also be participating in Do More 24 Delaware in March of 2022.  This is a 24-hour, single day of philanthropic giving designed to help non-profit organizations throughout Delaware.  Last year PTPDE participated and used the donations to support the Togo, West Africa School and Village Project.  This year of participation will be phase 2 of our fundraising project for Afghan refugees coming to Delaware.  Additional information about Do More 24 Delaware will be forthcoming in the new year.  More families from Afghanistan will be coming to Delaware in the late winter and early spring months, so we will be able to continue our support through this statewide event.

If you have questions about the project, you may send an email to Michele Weiner, Project Lead, at michele.weiner222@gmail.com.  Please help us help these refugees from Afghanistan.

We wish you and your families a safe and joyous holiday season!
