2021 PTPDE Youth Art Event

People to People Delaware Chapter provided a two day art workshop at the Boys and Girls Club of Delaware using the theme Unite for Justice, Unite for Peace.  The theme was created to reflect our nation’s reckoning with social justice issues.  Ms. Eunice Lafate, award winning artist, helped the students translate their ideas into visual concepts to bring the theme to life in their artwork.  Thank you to the Boys and Girls Club of Delaware for making this workshop possible.  Enjoy the vibrant art and thoughtful messages from the students!

Donations for Haiti

Donations for Haiti

The people of Haiti have again suffered from an earthquake.  Several months ago People to People Delaware sponsored a fun cooking/cultural program on Haiti given by Danielle Francois.  Unfortunately, Danielle’s family is from a mountain village that has been devastated by this earthquake.  She has given us a link that we can access that allows us to help the Haitian people.  Amazon will ship the goods to Danielle’s mother where she and others will be putting together a big shipment to Danielle’s family village.

How Can You Help?

If you would like to help Haiti, here is an easy way to help a local family in Delaware who has family in Haiti. Just click on the link, pick out what you wish to give and pay. Shipping goes to Miami at Lindny Jean Pierre’s Gift Registry Address that is not fully displayed for security. The family will ship the goods to their village soon.

Please join PTPDE in supporting this important effort.

Host a World Scholar!

Host a World Scholar!

Dear Members and Friends of People to People Delaware,

One of the most exciting aspects of our organization is the chance to meet with people around the globe.

We are being offered a wonderful opportunity by Daniel C. Bottomley, PhD, Director of Public Diplomacy & Global Initiatives in the Department of Political Science & International Relations at UD and Isa Haskologlu, Assistant Administrative Director in the SUSI Foreign Policy Program to host 18 scholars who hold either a MA or PhD in Diplomacy, Political Science, American Politics, or International Law. It is a joy to have discussions with others from different counties and cultures.  These scholars are from Indonesia, Greece, Brazil, Macedonia, China, Mexico, Costa Rica, Uganda, Israel, Papua New Guinea, Morocco, India, Pakistan, Romania, Nepal, Portugal, Turkey, and Kazakhstan.

Due to Covid measures, the University of Delaware summer program for these scholars will be virtual.  It is hoped that by January the scholars will be coming to the USA, and we can meet all of them in person at a dinner!

We are seeking to find up to 18 families willing to meet the scholars via Zoom on Saturday, July 17th and/or Saturday, July 24th.

Your responsibility would be to introduce the scholar to American culture, family life, local issues and cuisine.  Building a relationship is the goal.  It would be up to each family to decide how long to spend on the Zoom call. Perhaps it could be during a meal.  You may also mention a country that would interest you the most.  UD will match us with the scholars and let us know the times, due to time zone differences.

If you are willing to be a citizen diplomat and reach out to these scholars, please respond to jean.raleigh@ptpde.org  by June 27th.

Let us be a welcoming community!

Thank you,

Jean Raleigh

The purpose of People to People International is to enhance international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural and humanitarian activities involving the exchange of ideas and experiences directly among people of different countries and diverse cultures. PTPI and the Delaware Chapter will cooperate with any organizations which are of similar nature and purpose.

To achieve the goal of international understanding, People to People International and the Delaware Chapter will promote contact between peoples of every nation through many channels of communication. People of all ages and professions are invited to participate in these programs.

Once a year PTPDE has an annual meeting where a slate of officers and board members may be nominated and voted upon. All nominees, officers, and committee chairpersons must be members in good standing in PTPDE. Each member has one vote, the majority vote of those present and who send in their votes determines if the slate is accepted.

At all meetings of the chapter, total membership present shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business. The fiscal year of our chapter shall begin on July 1st. Upon completion of the fiscal year, a financial statement and the PTPDE Annual Report shall be made available to the membership and PTPI World Headquarters.

The president or co-presidents are the principal officers of the chapter and shall preside at all meetings, shall have general supervision of the affairs of the chapter, shall perform such other duties as may be properly required, shall also be an ex-officio member of all committees and shall submit the Chapter President’s Annual Report to PTPI World Headquarters.

The vice-president shall be designated by the Board of Directors and shall exercise the functions of the president during his/her absence or disability. The vice president shall have such powers and discharge such duties as may be assigned by the president, such as acting as overseer of various chairpersons and their committees.

The secretary shall be responsible for keeping minutes at each meeting and forwarding copies of the annual meeting to International Headquarters. The secretary also sends out the agendas, minutes, and other important notices.

The treasurer shall be responsible for membership dues and the payment of dues to World Headquarters, shall collect, administer and expend such other funds as may be received from time to time, shall make regular financial reports to the membership and to PTPI World Headquarters as requested, and shall act as overseer of the financial activities of all committees established by the chapter.

When you pay your annual membership fees and make additional donations, it tremendously helps PTPDE in its programming and projects. You can pay your membership fees and make additional donation HERE.

If you wish to become more active in PTPDE please let us know! You could join one of our committees:

  • A Public Relations Committee or Communications Committee is responsible for such publicity necessary to promote the activities of the chapter, to inform the community of PTPDE and provide information to the local media, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Also, the committee should send news and pictures of the chapter’s activities to World Headquarters for inclusion in the publications.
  • A Hosting Committee shall be responsible for organizing activities and finding host families for international visitors and/or People to People International groups sent to the chapter. The chairperson of this committee shall be the Home stay Coordinator and work closely with PTPI, the University of Delaware, Sister Cities and others.

In Memoriam: Hugh J. Kelly

Dear Members and Friends of PTPDE,

Hugh Kelly was involved with our Chapter for many years often serving on our Board and offering his advice when needed for legal matters.  Hugh loved meeting people and that is why an organization such as People to People was a perfect match for his warm personality, inviting smile and knowledge of world affairs.  Many of us still have fond memories of Hugh Kelly.

Obituary for Hugh J. Kelly

Hugh J. Kelly, age 84, of Hockessin, DE, died surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, March 10, 2021. Hugh was a loving husband, great dad, and caring grandfather. After graduating from Holy Cross he attended Fordham Law School and practiced law for the next 40 years. His infectious laugh brightened up every room and people were drawn to his gregarious, generous, and caring personality. Hugh never met a stranger, only potential friends. In his later years, he would sit outside and wave to neighbors as they passed by, often asking if they would like his autograph. This elicited a smile from all he met. Joking was a big part of his personality. He loved to tell his grandchildren that he won a gold medal in the 1936 Olympics. Grandpa and his stories were the center of every family gathering. Connection with people was one of his greatest pleasures. He will be greatly missed.

Hugh is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Madge Kelly; children: Denise Repka (Dan), Debbie Hank (Allen), Amy Kelly, Jeanette Gibbons (Ken), and Hugh B. Kelly (Lisa); grandchildren: Danny, Kelly, David, Brandon, Jordan, Natalia, Elyse, Brian, Quinn, and Luke. He was also very close to his brothers and sisters-in-law.

Services and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Ministry of Caring, 1410 N Claymont St, Wilmington, DE 19802. To send an online condolence, visit www.stranofeeley.com
